According to the report, the Railways Board is thinking of using Internet of Things-based technology to identify unpleasant smells in train restrooms.

According to The Economic Times, Indian Railways wants to use technology to address the problem of foul-smelling and unclean restrooms on trains. Passenger concerns regarding dirty restrooms continue despite multiple remodeling initiatives.

The report states that the Railways Board is thinking about using IoT-based technology to identify unpleasant smells in train restrooms. The idea, which will first be tested in a few coaches, has been awarded to Viliso Technologies, a firm located in Mumbai.

Sensing-based smart devices are being developed to identify unpleasant odors in train restrooms. By identifying volatile substances and chemicals in the atmosphere, these sensors can provide data for processing to a central hub. This analysis can be used to set up automated reactions, including notifying cleaning personnel when unpleasant odors are noticed. Better odor management and faster intervention are made possible by this real-time monitoring.

Viliso Technologies provides Internet of Things (IoT)-based solutions for better sanitation, such as the electronic gadget Gandhvedh, which keeps track of temperature, humidity, total volatile organic compound (TVOC), and odor. Gandhvedh is a sanitation monitoring system that is installed in toilets and transmits odor data to online and mobile applications used by caregivers or authorities.

It’s not known if Indian Railways intends to use Gandhvedh specifically in its trains and set up restrooms for monitoring and odor detection.
